Dear Friends,

Salvador Allende Memorial Scholarship

The Canadian-Chilean Cultural Society Casa Salvador Allende - Toronto, a non-profit organization within the Chilean community is proudly working towards the creation of scholarships for youth striving towards a post-secondary education. The Salvador Allende Memorial Scholarship strives to assist our youth in the pursuit of their education by contributing their knowledge of our culture and history to the community.

A recent study on marginalization of youth of colour in education revealed that drop out rates among students who speak Spanish is double the average drop out rate of 20%.   The evidence of a nearly 40% drop out rate amongst Latin American youth is deeply troubling, especially when coupled with the apparent increase in gang activity in the City.  Providing guidance and assistance to our youth so they can succeed in their educational pursuits is of critical importance.

The Salvador Allende Memorial Scholarship will grant two scholarships of $1,000 each to Latin American youth towards their post-secondary education expenses. The Scholarships will not only provide material support to youth in their studies, but will contribute the knowledge of their roots and culture.

We are asking for contributions towards this Scholarship fund in order to allow for its expansion in coming years.  With costs of post-secondary education steadily rising, the necessity to assist our youth in achieving their education is growing.

Income tax receipts will be issued for donations greater than $25. Cheque be made out to:

Donations may also be made on-line by using Visa of MasterCard at http://www.pcwf.ca or by calling telephone (416) 964-3380.

Like President Allende, we too believe that “much sooner than later, the great avenues will again be opened through which will pass free people to construct a better society”.  For our youth, that avenue begins with access to education.

We hope to count with your support and we thank you in advance for your generosity and kindness.

Sincerely,

Patricio Bascuñán
